It’s important for all to recycle

We are so fortunate to live in a community the where the city provides the opportunity to recycle for free. The facility is open three convenient times during the week. It’s not only free but they make it so easy. All the people need to do is drive up to the entrance, wait their turn and then drive into the building to be unloaded. You don’t even have to get out of your vehicle if you prefer not to. The volunteer staff will remove all your recyclable materials and then you are all set to exit.

I typically like to get out, if only for a moment and quickly chat with the volunteers. Most are retired individuals and I find them very polite. I normally create some sort of small talk with most of them about the weather or an upcoming event in the community. Then when I notice they are finished I thank them and offer some kind words like “Have a nice day or weekend”.

The sad part is there is a population of about 4000 in the city. The volunteers have told me though only about 200 people recycle each week. That basically means the rest of the community is throwing everything away. I know of other communities where recycling is mandatory and in some cases the people have to pay extra for it. The people that don’t participate just fail to realize what a tremendous reward they have been given.

But it is nice to see there are some other parts of the United States where they take recycling very seriously and have for years. It’s just that important to them and it should be for everyone.

Besides, if you don't recycle you make an Indian on a highway somewhere cry.

...or maybe that's if you litter.
:p

Either way, I'm glad we recycle too. It just frosts my cookies that every day at work they don't. I'd like to just do it myself, but I don't really have a way to transport all that stuff, or a place to keep it until our center is opened... so it makes me feel bad to just throw recyclable stuff away.
